The Simple Explanation of Biofilm and Probiotics
Biofilm is formed when free floating cellular microorganisms adhere to a surface by secreting a slime like substance. The individual cells then attract other organisms that form a colony. The slime-like substance hardens forming layers of protective extracellular matrix, known as biofilm. As biofilm layers harden and increase in number, sometimes reaching hundreds or thousands of layers in thickness, they protect the colony and become further resistant to conventional cleaners, and antibiotics. Conventional cleaners will only kill the first few layers of organisms leaving the remaining bacteria, mold and fungus to regrow immediately after the cleaner drys. The only way for the biofilm and attendent organisms to be removed is by acid etching, sand blasting, a few highly toxic industrial cleaners or through the use of probiotic cleaners. Over time the Probiotic cleaners eat through and digest the biofilm thus eliminating the matrix that the bacteria, mold and fungus live in and need to survive. A distinct advantage of Probiotics is that they do not attact the organisms living in the matrix directly and hence do not give them the opportunity to mutate and gain resistance. The Probiotics simply remove both the food source and the protective layers thus eliminating the unwanted organisms.

The update article linked below shows the status of one of the most common problems in hospitals, nonsocomial or hospital aquired infections. Probiotic cleaners have been found to produce a profound reduction in biofilm and hence can reduce or eliminate one of the most prevalent sources of infection in hospitals.
(A product that has such profound efficacy in hospitals is one that will have corresponding beneficial effect in most other environments including schools, nursing homes, daycare centers, restaurants, homes etc.)

In April 2009 the Journal of Hospital Infection hopothisized that a probiotic bacterial and biosurficants would be one of the best ways to combat biofilm related infection. They were unaware that a manufacturer was in the final stages of testing
just such a product line that met their hypothesis...and performed just as they predicted it would , eradicating infection causing biofilm to below detectable limits!
